Two Juneau men sentenced to federal prison for drug conspiracy
Anchorage, Alaska – U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced that on July 27, 2012, Kenneth Edward Hausinger, and on August 22, 2012, Darren Louis Wigg, both Juneau residents, Hausinger, 49, was sentenced to 24 months in prison and Wigg, 34, was sentenced to 60 months in prison for their roles in a drug trafficking conspiracy. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy M. Burgess imposed the sentences.
According to information presented to the court by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack S. Schmidt, who prosecuted the case, the charges arose when a suspicious package was identified at a Federal Express facility in Seattle, Washington, and revealed to contain 2,988 pills of ecstacy and 79.2 grams of cocaine to be delivered to a business in Juneau, Alaska, named Southeast Computer and Photography owned by Kenneth Hausinger. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted a controlled delivery to the above named business using an electronic beacon which alerts upon the package being opened and applied the narcotics with theft detection powder. The package was delivered and received by Hausinger who then transported the package to a room occupied by Darren Wigg at The Alaska Hotel. The Juneau Police Department had an open investigation on Wigg for the distribution of cocaine. The package was opened inside Wigg’s residence and the alert tone activated indicating the package had been opened and police arrested both men. Officers searched the hands of Hausinger and Wigg who both had theft detection powder on their hands, indicating they had handled the narcotics.
Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Burgess stated the serious of the offense, deterrence of the defendant and others, the protection of the public, and rehabilitation of the defendants related to their criminal histories as reasons that supported the imposition of the above sentences.
Ms. Loeffler commended the DEA and the Juneau Police Department Drug Metro Unit for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Hausinger and Wigg.
